Use the SIR process to add your newlywed bride's name to the voter list. Contact your local election office or booth-level officer and fill out and submit the form.

If you're newly married, you may be facing a similar challenge. Adding your spouse's name to your family's voter list can be a daunting task. To simplify this process, the SIR (State Information Registry) process has been introduced nationwide. If you also want to add your wife's name to government records, such as the voter list, you can easily do so by following this process.

What is the "SIR" process?

"SIR" is a process run by the Election Commission of India, which stands for Special Intensive Revision. The primary function of the "SIR" process is to revise the voter list, i.e., to inspect it, remove the names of deceased or migrated voters, and add the names of eligible new voters, ensuring accurate voter information.

Notes

If you recently married and need to add your wife's name, using SIR is only possible if she is an Indian voter in some state. If you want to add her name to the family register or ration card/citizen identity document, that process will be related to the state-level Citizen/Family Register, rather than the SIR. It has nothing to do with the SIR. The SIR process is solely for updating the voter list.

How will names be updated in the SIR?

  • Voter list revisions have begun in several states and union territories in 2025. The SIR process has not yet been implemented nationwide. However, if this process has begun in your area, you will need to contact the local election office or Booth-Level Officer (BLO).
  • The Booth-Level Officer (BLO) will come to your home and deliver the SIR form, or you can also obtain it online. To do this, visit the website https://voters.eci.gov.in/.
  • In addition to your information, fill in your bride/wife's full name, date of birth, address, and other information on the form. Also, fill in details about your voter history, such as your old voter card.
  • Submit your form to the Booth-Level Officer (BLO).
  • After submitting the form, the Election Commission or local office will release a draft voter list/register. Check your name on it.
  • If your name is missing from the draft list, you can file an objection. There is a set period for this.
