This country’s army will use only iPhone, Android smartphones banned

New Delhi. The Israel Defense Force (IDF) has taken a big and surprising step to strengthen cyber security. Now all senior officers from Lieutenant Colonel and above will use only iPhone for official communication. Android phones have been completely banned due to security reasons. This decision has been taken after several digital infiltration attempts in the army and increasing cyber espionage activities.

Why was Android banned?

According to reports by Israel’s Army Radio and Jerusalem Post, Android devices were found to be more vulnerable to cyber intrusion. Several honey pot attacks targeting soldiers and officers were reported in recent years, where malware was planted on phones through fake profiles in an attempt to steal location and sensitive data.

According to Israel National News, the new guidelines state that only iPhones will be used for military purposes. No Android phone will be allowed to be used in operational or command activities. Additionally, Android devices will be allowed for personal use only.

This decision has come at a time when Google recently claimed that its Pixel smartphone has been included in the security list of the US Department of Defense (DoDIN). Google said that the Pixel has a state-of-the-art security system, but according to the Israel Defense Force, the iPhone’s closed and controlled ecosystem proved to be more secure.

According to reports, the IDF has conducted several internal security exercises over the years, in which the digital vigilance of soldiers was tested by creating cybernets similar to fake accounts linked to Hezbollah. These exercises found that Android devices were at greater risk.
