Ranveer Singh recently attended the closing ceremony of the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. At the event, Ranveer spoke candidly to the audience and Kantara star Rishab Shetty, who was also seated among the guests. However, when the Dhurandhar actor called Daiva, local folk gods who are an integral part of the Kantara storyline, a “female ghost” and comically mimicked an iconic scene featuring Rishab, he drew huge criticism from fans. Many parade behind the #shameonRanveerSingh on X.
The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) on Monday even submitted a complaint to the police against the actor, alleging he insulted Goddess Chamundadevi. Now, taking to his social media handle, Ranveer Singh issued an apology.
On Tuesday morning, Ranveer Singh addressed the controversy through a statement on his Instagram Stories. He wrote, “My intention was to highlight Rishabh's incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration (sic).”
Singh added that he didn’t want to hurt sentiments, saying, “I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I've hurt anyone's sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”
While Rishab Shetty laughed during the mimicry, social media users criticised Singh’s comments and performance, calling them disrespectful to the cultural traditions shown in the film. Many took offence at the misrepresentation of daivas, which are forest deities, not ghosts.
Rishab Shetty has not made any public statement about the incident. The controversy emerges as Singh readies his upcoming film, Dhurandhar, for release later this week.
