With the release of Dhurandhar approaching, the Delhi High Court has directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to examine the objections raised by the parents of late Major Mohit Sharma, who claim the movie is based on their son’s life without their consent.
Major Mohit Sharma, an elite Army officer, was martyred in 2009 during an anti-terror operation in the Kashmir Valley. His parents argued in their petition that the film “appears to be directly inspired” by his persona, covert missions and ultimate sacrifice. They have also sought a private screening for the family before the film hits theatres.
Justice Sachin Datta disposed of the petition filed by Sushila Sharma and Rajendra Prasad Sharma, allowing the CBFC to refer the film to the Indian Army for an appropriate review if required.
The CBFC has reportedly suggested 10 cuts. The Board’s counsel, Ashish Dixit, informed the court that the film has not yet been certified and remains under scrutiny. The filmmakers, however, have declared that Dhurandhar is not a biopic and carries a disclaimer stating it is a fictional work.
Senior advocate Saurabh Kirpal, appearing for Jio Studios, the film’s producer, told the court that although the movie is inspired by real events, it is unrelated to Major Sharma’s life and is instead set against the Karachi underworld backdrop.
The petitioners argued that several missions conducted by Major Sharma — including undercover operations and intelligence-based assignments — remain classified. Any depiction loosely based on such operations, whether accurate or fictionalized, could unintentionally expose sensitive tactical details, posing national security risks.
They further claimed that the film’s release could fuel propaganda, provoke retaliation from adversaries, and increase security threats to the family, who currently live without special protection in a civilian neighbourhood.
Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar, is an upcoming Indian spy-action thriller featuring Ranveer Singh as a top intelligence operative tasked with infiltrating a terror network in Pakistan’s Lyari region. The film is slated for nationwide release on Friday.
