Ranveer Singh-starrer Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar, has been a centre of controversy after the parents of late Major Mohit Sharma moved the Delhi High Court seeking a stay on its release. Their petition stated that the film seemed to be a life of the officer based on the aspects of the movie, which made them very concerned about the accuracy and the sensitivity of the matter.

Earlier the week, the Court requested the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to seriously consider the objections raised and even, if necessary, seek a consultation with the Indian Army before issuing the certificate.
On Tuesday, the board cleared the movie, calling it a fictional piece. The brother of the officer, Madhur Sharma, while talking to HT City on the CBFC decision, said that the board looked very prompt in its action and seemed to have followed its own process. He mentioned that he believed the CBFC had done the required checks and if the film is being presented as a work of fiction, the family wants that a proper disclaimer be shown at the time of the release.
However, Madhur was not satisfied with the extent to which the Major Sharma’s parents’ concerns had been addressed. He said that by providing the family a pre-release screening, the speculation on social media regarding the film could have been avoided. In his view, only those who had a close relationship with the late officer would be able to say if the movie is based on his life, and such an initiative would have helped in clearing up the misunderstandings before they escalated.
Madhur spoke of the family’s legal counsel when asked about their next steps and said that he himself would be taking their advice before deciding on whether to respond further in court. He also pointed out that they were having consultations on the topic.
The controversy of Dhurandhar escalated very quickly after the release of the trailer with many people online drawing comparisons between the protagonist of Ranveer Singh and Major Mohit Sharma. Madhur himself made a public appeal to get clarity which, according to him, led to the filing of the legal petition. He claimed that the petition was lodged during the very short span between his online query and the director’s statement denying any connection to the officer’s life.
Madhur pointed out that the family never intended to solicit any benefit for themselves. On the other hand, what they really want is for filmmakers and viewers show the utmost respect when dealing with the stories of soldiers who lost their lives.
The movie is set to release on November 7, 2025.
