These days there is a lot of discussion going on in BJP regarding the post of National President. After the results of Bihar Assembly elections, new energy is visible within the party. Sources reveal that the new name may be announced any time before December 2025. The special thing is that this time a leader from Uttar Pradesh is most likely to get this responsibility.
UP is considered the center of Indian politics, where there are 80 Lok Sabha seats. The BJP wants to maintain its strong hold here, especially in view of the 2027 assembly elections. If he becomes the president from UP, it will be the fourth time that a leader from this state will take charge of the party. Earlier, stalwarts like Lal Krishna Advani, Rajnath Singh and JP Nadda were from UP.
Why is BJP focusing on UP?
Party strategists believe that making the president from UP will deepen the roots of the organization. The victory here increases the strength of BJP at the national level. The political analyst says, “Caste and regional equations are very complex in UP. The local leader understands them better, which will make preparations for 2027 easier.” If we look at the statistics, in 2017, BJP had won 312 seats in UP, which proved helpful in enhancing its image at the national level.
This step is also important because the number of OBC voters in UP is about 40-45 percent. BJP wants to challenge opposition parties like SP and BSP by giving them a strong message. This will increase the unity of the party and bring new enthusiasm among the workers.
Who is leading the race: Keshav Prasad Maurya or Dinesh Sharma?
Two prominent names are emerging – Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Dinesh Sharma. Both have been associated with BJP and RSS for a long time. Keshav belongs to the OBC (Kushwaha) community, while Dinesh is known to be a Brahmin face.
This contest is based on caste equations. Earlier OBC leaders like Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Dharmendra Pradhan were in the news, but after the victory in Bihar, the focus shifted to UP. Experts believe that OBC card is the priority of BJP at this time, because this class plays a decisive role in many states.
Keshav Prasad Maurya: The journey of an old warrior of the organization
Keshav Maurya’s story is from an ordinary worker to a top leader. He entered politics by joining RSS and Bajrang Dal. Vishwa Hindu Parishad veteran Ashok Singhal was his mentor.
- 2012: Became MLA for the first time from Sirathu seat of Kaushambi.
- 2014: Reached Lok Sabha from Phulpur.
- 2016: Appointed UP BJP President.
- 2017: Under his leadership, the party achieved a historic victory, then became Deputy Chief Minister and took over the PWD ministry.
Despite Sirathu losing in 2022, he was retained in the post, which shows his strength. Recently he met Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and JP Nadda. PM Modi gave him the responsibility of taking the urn of Buddha’s ashes to Russia and co-in-charge of Bihar elections.
Kushwaha community numbers crores in UP-Bihar. The analyst says, “Making Keshav the president will increase BJP’s confidence among OBC voters, which had slightly decreased in the 2024 Lok Sabha.” This step will give a strong message of social justice to the party.
Dinesh Sharma: Strength of Brahmin face
Dr. Dinesh Sharma was the former Deputy Chief Minister and also the Mayor of Lucknow. They have a strong hold in education and organization. Brahmin votes (10-12 per cent in UP) form part of the BJP’s core support. If he is elected, there will be balance among the upper castes. But at present there is more emphasis on OBCs.
Why does this change matter?
The new president will decide BJP’s 2027 UP strategy. This will weaken the opposition and the workers will remain united. Statistics show that during the tenure of previous presidents, the party won 3 Lok Sabha and many assembly elections. This decision will change the direction of national politics, especially in the Hindi belt.
