What is Sanchar Sathi App and why is the government promoting it?
DoT (Department of Telecommunications) says that this app has been designed to keep citizens safe from fake phones, stolen mobiles, SIM fraud and telecom misuse. The government wants every new phone to come with a Sanchar Saathi. So that users can easily complain about fraud or theft. The real or fake identity of the mobile can be known immediately. In the guidelines issued by the government, phone companies have been asked to ensure that the app is pre-installed, visible and functional on the first setup screen. In the phones which are already in the market, instructions have been given to send this app through software update. Companies have to implement this rule within 90 days and submit the report in 120 days.
What is the opposition's allegation?
After the government order, Congress opposed this app calling it a 'snooping tool'. Priyanka Gandhi said that every citizen has the right to privacy and the government is crossing this limit. He claims that the government wants to peep into every phone, people's personal chats and data are being accessed in the name of cyber security. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Randeep Surjewala have demanded its immediate withdrawal. The opposition says there is a thin line between reporting fraud and surveilling people and Sanchar Saathi is crossing that line.
Will Sanchar Saathi be able to delete the app or not?
It has been made clear by the government that if you want, you can delete this app. It is the user's choice to keep it in the phone or not. This statement is a news of relief for all those who were worried about privacy.
How to delete Sanchar Saathi App?
- Open the app in your phone's Settings.
- Select the option Apps or Apps & Notifications or App Management.
- Search for 'Sanchar Sathi' in the app list.
- Here you will see all the installed apps.
- You can open the app and uninstall it.
- You can also uninstall the app by directly clicking on it.
