Queen Elizabeth II reportedly had an angry phone call with her grandson, Prince Harry over Meghan Markle's spending habits, a royal author has claimed. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex married in May 2018, but their time as senior royals was short-lived following their decision to step back from their roles in 2020.
Over the years, reports have alleged that the Duchess was "disappointed" over Harry's finances, as she had reportedly hoped for more. Now, a royal author has claimed that her spending habits even managed to infuriate the late Queen.
Appearing on the Daily T podcast, author Robert Jobson said that the late Queen was "annoyed" when Harry phoned her once at 5pm while she was having afternoon tea, but was even more annoyed about her grandson's request for money.
Host Camilla Tominey said: "She (the late Queen) took a call from Harry and then reportedly remarked, 'more money,' rolling her eyes." Mr Jobson replied: "Yeah, I think that she got fed up."
He added that the Palace had "spent a lot of money" supporting the couple.
The author said: "[Harry] was then saying 'oh I never got any [money] - he did. He got many thousands of pounds. More than we can probably know. To the point where the King said, 'I'm not a bank anymore', so that's quite telling."
The author then alleged that the late Queen was not impressed with Meghan's spending on clothes during her time as a royal.
Ms Tominey then went on to discuss how "the [late] Queen thought Meghan was spending too much on clothes", to which Mr Jobson said: "She did. But some people might criticise that as in the 1940s and 1950s, when she was being dressed for these tours, there was a lot of money being spent on royal tours."
Ms Tominey then speculated: "But maybe not £60,000 on one Dior gown she wore during the 2019 Morocco tour?"
Mr Jobson replied: "That was seen as over the top... not sending the right message. The Queen, at the end, was always about the right message. Throughout her life, she got it exactly right."
Back in 2019, the Daily Mail reported that the Duchess's wardrobe for her and Harry's tour of Morocco allegedly totalled £110,000.
