MBBS in Russia: The craze for medical education in India is immense among students. This can be gauged by the fact that every year, over 2 million students take the NEET exam for admission to over 1.20 lakh MBBS seats. We also learn that competition for MBBS admission is intense, and seats are limited. Many students qualify for NEET but are unable to secure admission to medical colleges.
In this situation, thousands of students annually go abroad to pursue MBBS. Russia is the most popular country among these students, where students have been studying for decades. In 2024, over 31,000 Indian students were studying in Russia, of which over 21,000 went to pursue MBBS or medical education there. The question arises: what is it about Russia that attracts thousands of Indian students to pursue MBBS there every year? Let's find out the answer.
Why do Indians pursue MBBS in Russia?
Accredited Universities: Russia boasts numerous accredited universities, including institutions like Lomonosov Moscow State University, St. Petersburg University, and Kazan State Medical University. These are recognized by the WHO and NMC. Upon graduation, one can also take the FMGE exam.
Studying in English: The biggest challenge when studying abroad is the language. Fortunately, Russian medical universities offer English instruction, making the course easier to understand. Furthermore, the universities offer high-quality education.
Low Cost of Study: Pursuing an MBBS in private medical colleges in India can cost up to ₹1 crore (approximately $10 million). In comparison, you can earn a medical degree in Russia for between ₹270,000 and ₹400,000 per year. Furthermore, living and food expenses are also significantly lower.
These three factors contribute to the increasing number of Indian students pursuing medical education in Russia each year. In response to the growing number of Indians in Russia, the Russian government has announced scholarships. The Russian Embassy plans to award 200 scholarships to Indian students. You can find more information on the embassy's website.
