In the glitzy and glamorous world of Bollywood many celebrity couples are admired and idealised but there are only a few that sustain the test of time and their bond remains untouched. One such story was of legendary actor Dharmendra and the dream girl of Bollywood Hema Malini. Marked by loyalty complexity and deep affection their bond remained one of cinema’s most enduring relationships for nearly 45 years until Dharmendra’s passing on November 24 this year at the age of 89. As the film industry continues to mourn the legendary actor an old anecdote shared by Hema Malini about her first meeting with Dharmendra’s mother and her fond memories of his jovial father has resurfaced. Hema’s First Loving Meeting with Dharmendra’s Mother In her biography Hema Malini: Beyond The Dream Girl written by Ram Kamal Mukherjee she spoke about an emotional meeting with Dharmendras mother Satwant Kaur. Hema wrote “Dharamji’s mother Satwant Kaur was equally warm and kind-hearted. I remember how she came to meet me once at a dubbing studio in Juhu after I had conceived Esha. She hadn’t informed anyone in the house. I touched her feet and she hugged me and said ‘Beta khush raho hamesha (Be happy always).’ I was happy that they were happy with me.” Fond Memories of Dharmendra’s Father Hema also recalled memories of Dharmendras father Kewal Kishan Singh Deol. She said “He would drop by and meet my father or brother for chai. Instead of shaking hands he would arm-wrestle them and after defeating them he would jokingly say ‘Tum log ghee–makkhan–lassi khao idli aur sambhar se taqat nahi aati (Have butter lassi ghee. Idli and sambhar won’t make you strong).’ My father would join in the laughter. He (Dharmendra’s father) was a very jovial person.” Remembering Dharmendra Dharmendra who passed away at the age of 89 after battling prolonged illness has left a deep void in the Indian film industry. As his fans and admirers continue to mourn his wife Hema Malini also penned an emotional tribute on social media for her husband. She wrote “loving husband adoring father friend philosopher guide and poet.” She added “He was everything to me… My personal loss is indescribable and the vacuum created is something that will last through the rest of my life. Though their marriage had its fair share of challenges given that Dharmendra was already married to Prakash Kaur the duo shared a strong bond that remains one of Bollywood’s most unforgettable love stories.
