Ranveer Singh Kantara controversy: Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has found himself at the centre of a controversy. A Bengaluru-based advocate filed a police complaint accusing him of insulting the sacred Daiva tradition during a performance at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.

The incident took place on November 28 while the Padmavat actor was praising Kantara: Chapter 1 and its director-star Rishab Shetty.

Advocate Prashanth Metal complained to the High Grounds Police Station, alleging that Ranveer’s recreation of the Ullalthi Daiva scene was disrespectful and offensive. According to the complaint, the actor not only mimicked the revered ritualistic performance but also used terms like “demon” and “female ghost” to describe the Daiva. The complainant claims these remarks “hurt the sentiments of millions of Hindus, particularly the Tulu-speaking community of Karnataka.”

The case has reportedly been filed under Sections 299, 302 and 196 of the Bharat Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The complainant argues that Ranveer’s act was both “illegal and offensive,” calling for action against him for allegedly showing the Ullalthi Daiva in a derogatory manner during a public festival event.

The complaint surfaced shortly after Ranveer addressed the controversy on social media. Facing widespread criticism and trolling online, the actor released a public apology through an Instagram Story, attempting to clarify his intent.

Ranveer wrote, “My intention was to highlight Rishab’s incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it takes to perform that particular scene the way he did, for which he has my utmost admiration.”

He added, “I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition, and belief in our country. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”

The Daiva tradition portrayed in Kantara is considered sacred in Tulu Nadu, where the ritual holds immense cultural and spiritual value. Given the deep emotional connection communities share with the practice, any perceived misrepresentation tends to invite swift backlash.

The police are yet to announce whether the complaint will convert into a formal FIR.
