How was the name of Government House changed?
In independent India, the process before changing the name of Government House was not easy nor did it reflect dictatorship. The then Prime Minister Pandit Nehru corresponded with the Chief Ministers and Governors of all the states before changing the name of Government House. Had consultation. Government House was renamed Raj Bhavan after Nehru himself wrote a letter to the people holding every relevant post.
Nehru wrote a letter for Raj Bhavan
Nehru wrote in a letter to all the Chief Ministers “You must have noticed that the name of the Government House in New Delhi has now been changed to Rashtrapati Bhavan. A Governor has suggested to us that the Government House of his State should be named ‘Rajapal Bhavan’. We are of the view that whatever name is adopted for all the official residences of the State Governments, it should be uniform throughout India and should also be simple and appropriate to the different languages of India.
