Name of Raj Bhavan changed in Jharkhand, Governor Secretariat issued notification

How was the name of Government House changed?

In independent India, the process before changing the name of Government House was not easy nor did it reflect dictatorship. The then Prime Minister Pandit Nehru corresponded with the Chief Ministers and Governors of all the states before changing the name of Government House. Had consultation. Government House was renamed Raj Bhavan after Nehru himself wrote a letter to the people holding every relevant post.

Nehru wrote a letter for Raj Bhavan

Nehru wrote in a letter to all the Chief Ministers “You must have noticed that the name of the Government House in New Delhi has now been changed to Rashtrapati Bhavan. A Governor has suggested to us that the Government House of his State should be named ‘Rajapal Bhavan’. We are of the view that whatever name is adopted for all the official residences of the State Governments, it should be uniform throughout India and should also be simple and appropriate to the different languages of India.

One suggestion that has been made—with which we agree—is that the name should be ‘Raj Bhawan’. The name is simple, easy to understand and also suits different state languages. We therefore suggest that this name, i.e. ‘Raj Bhawan’, should be applied to the official residences of all Governors and Heads of State. Before taking a final decision, I would like to know your feedback on this matter.
Sincerely,
Signature: Jawaharlal Nehru
To: Governors and heads of all states”

Nehru cabinet meeting

Before Nehru did this, a cabinet meeting was also held, after which it was decided that the Government House present in all the states should be named Raj Bhavan. After this, in the month of December, all the states along with Bihar officially issued the notification to change the name of Government House. Bihar was the first to issue a notification in this regard in which Raj Bhavan has been described as the residence of the Governor.
Although Nehru wanted the Government House to be called Governor Bhawan, but many Chief Ministers suggested that it should be named Raj Bhawan, so Nehru agreed to it.
