IPL 2026: Why PBKS, GT, DC & KKR Could Target Shai Hope in the Auction
Cricket Gully | December 4, 2025 2:39 AM CST

Shai Hope has truly established himself as one of the most reliable players from the West Indies in the shorter formats over the past few years. His growth in T20 cricket has been particularly noteworthy. While he was traditionally celebrated for his classic batting style in ODIs, Hope has now transformed his T20 approach, evolving into a much more aggressive and well-rounded batter.

He has amassed an impressive 5144 runs at a strike rate of 130 in T20 matches. These stats clearly highlight how much he has developed as a T20 batsman. On top of that, he brings solid wicketkeeping skills, a calm demeanor, and the ability to handle both spin and pace with ease. This unique combination makes him a highly valuable overseas player for the IPL.

As the IPL 2026 auction draws near, several teams are likely to take an interest in him, thanks to his current form, versatility in batting positions, and dependable wicketkeeping. Let’s explore which franchises might realistically target Shai Hope in the upcoming auction.

Punjab Kings

The Punjab Kings could be one of the top contenders to pursue Shai Hope. With Josh Inglis being released, the team is now on the lookout for a backup wicketkeeper who can also make an impact in the top order.

Hope is a perfect fit for this role. He has the technique to bat at number 3, a crucial position for PBKS where stability is often essential. Additionally, Ricky Ponting, who is now with PBKS, has previously worked with Shai Hope during his coaching stint at Delhi Capitals. Ponting had faith in him back then, and Hope delivered solid performances whenever he got the chance.

PBKS typically seeks reliable anchors who can rotate the strike, build innings, and allow power hitters like Stoinis or Shashank Singh to play freely. Hope fits this mold perfectly. With his enhanced T20 strike rate and extensive experience, Punjab could genuinely reap the benefits of having him on their team.

Gujarat Titans

If you're looking for a team that might be eyeing Shai Hope, look no further than the Gujarat Titans (GT). As they gear up for IPL 2026, GT is keen on bolstering their backup options, particularly at the top of the order.

Hope could serve as a solid backup for Jos Buttler, or even team up with him if the situation calls for it. His versatility to bat anywhere from the 1 to 4 positions adds a fantastic layer of flexibility to the Titans’ batting lineup.

While he may not be the typical power-hitter like some of the other foreign openers, Hope's stability and smart shot selection can help GT keep their batting unit balanced. The franchise has always favored players who are technically sound and can handle pressure, and Hope fits that description like a glove.

Delhi Capitals

Now, let’s talk about the Delhi Capitals (DC). They’re another strong contender for Shai Hope, especially since he’s played for them in the past. With the release of two overseas openers, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Faf du Plessis, there’s a significant gap at the top of their batting order.

DC is in need of a dependable player to open the innings or bat at No. 3, and Shai Hope is more than capable of stepping into that role. He brings not just stability but also valuable wicketkeeping experience, which would be a big plus for the team.

Given DC's ongoing struggles with consistency in their opening combination, Hope could provide the steady start they desperately need. His previous experience with the franchise and familiarity with Indian pitches give him a distinct advantage over many other overseas options available in the auction.

Kolkata Knight Riders

KKR are stepping into the IPL 2026 auction with the biggest budget in the league, giving them the freedom to snag any overseas player they desire. With the release of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Quinton de Kock, they now have an opening for a wicketkeeper-batter.

This is where Shai Hope comes into play as a compelling option. KKR typically looks for batters who can keep the scoreboard ticking, apply pressure on bowlers, and know when to dig in during crucial moments. Hope embodies all of these traits.

The team already boasts explosive hitter Rinku to complement this firepower, they need a technically sound batter who can stabilize the innings, and Hope is just the man for that job. With their ample budget, KKR can easily pursue him if they believe he’s the right match for their strategy.
