The eighth Economic Census will be undertaken in 2027, statistics secretary Saurabh Garg said on Wednesday.
"We will do the economic census following the population census," Garg said.
The census data will be used to create the statistical business register (SBR), which will map enterprises across states and track whether they are active or closed. ET had reported in March that the government was planning to create the SBR.
The Economic Census essentially gives a complete count of all establishments located within India. It offers disaggregated information on various operational and structural variables of all establishments in the country, thus providing crucial inputs for policy-making.
As for the Population Census , minister of state for home affairs Nityanand Rai told the parliament on Tuesday that it will be held in two phases, with the first phase between April and September 2026 and the second one in February 2027.
Garg said the government is undertaking the harmonisation and standardisation of data across ministries and states.
