Not long ago, India was largely dependent on imports, with most electronics being imported. However, things are changing rapidly. With the Make in India initiative, the country is now building its own electronics industry, attracting large investments and boosting local manufacturing. As a result, India’s electronics exports are growing rapidly, leaving behind even some traditional sectors like textiles. With strong government support and expanding factories, India is on its way to becoming a global hub for electronics manufacturing.

India has made significant progress in mobile and electronics manufacturing and has become the second largest mobile producing country in the world. In the year 2014, India had only 2 mobile manufacturing units, but now it is growing rapidly, the country has more than 300 manufacturing units, which emphasizes on significant expansion in this important sector. In 2014-15, only 26 percent of the mobile phones being sold in India were made in India, the rest were imported. It is noteworthy that today 99.2 percent of all mobile phones sold in India are made in India. The manufacturing value of mobile phones has increased from ₹ 18,900 crore in financial year 2014 to ₹ 4,22,000 crore in financial year 2024. Every year 325 to 330 million mobile phones are produced in India and on an average one billion mobile phones are used in India. Exports, which were almost non-existent in 2014, have now crossed ₹1,29,000 crore.

Launched in 2014, Make in India initiative is an important step in India’s nation-building efforts. This initiative was conceived during a period when India’s economic growth had declined sharply, and the country faced pressing challenges to sustaining its growth trajectory. Against this backdrop, “Make in India” was created to transform India into a global hub for design and manufacturing. Its main objective was to ease investment, promote innovation and develop world-class infrastructure. As one of the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiatives, it sought to not only promote India’s manufacturing capabilities but also showcase its industrial potential on the global stage.
