Manoj Bajpayee, one of the powerful actors of Indian cinema, recently talked openly about his remuneration. Manoj Bajpayee, known for his strong acting ability and unique characters in the entertainment world, said that even though he has got a lot of love from the audience and critics, in terms of fees, he has still not been able to join the category of those select big stars who get huge amounts of money.
During a program, Manoj Bajpayee said in very clear words, “MNREGA has been imposed on us… We do not earn as much as we work hard. We never get fees like big stars.” His comments point to the inequalities that exist in the entertainment industry, where fees are determined based on popularity and box office prospects.
Manoj Bajpayee said that despite years of hard work, hundreds of auditions and a difficult journey, he still feels struggling in terms of remuneration. He also clarified that his complaint is not with the producers, but with the system in which star-established image is given more importance than art. He believes that an artist’s value should be determined by his or her skill and contribution, not just his or her commercial success.
The actor also revealed that there was a time when he had to accept less remuneration for many important roles, just so that he could stay connected with work and deliver his art to the audience. He said that even today he chooses every project thoughtfully, keeping in mind the responsibilities of his team and family.
The issue of pay inequality within the industry is not new. Many middle class artists have raised their voice on this topic from time to time. Manoj Bajpayee’s statement once again brings this debate to the center stage. They point out that while the massively popular stars get fees running into crores of rupees, character artists and serious actors are paid much less in comparison, even if their contribution to the film’s success is extremely important.
The actor also stressed that the current OTT era has provided new opportunities for artistes to express themselves. Despite the success of web series like “Family Man”, they find themselves in the same situation where their talent is not being compared on the economic scale. Manoj believes that OTT platforms have encouraged content-based cinema, but there is still a lot of scope for improvement in the fee structure.
Despite this, the actor expressed a positive outlook towards the future. He believes that audience tastes are changing and talent-based content is getting more appreciation. He said that if the industry adopts transparency and equitable remuneration models, the economic outlook of artists can improve in the coming years.
This candor of Manoj Bajpayee not only brings out the reality of the industry but also highlights the real struggle of the artists, which is often ignored behind the glamour.
