It's about to get harder for users to use free AI tools. Google has reduced the free access limit for its Gemini and OpenAI has reduced the free access limit for its Sora models. This could be a setback for users who rely on free AI services for everyday content creation. The companies say these steps were necessary to handle increasing demand and significant computing costs.
Google Changes Free Prompt and Image Generation Limits
Google imposed limits on free prompts and image generation with the launch of Gemini 3 Pro. A user was allowed to create 5 prompts per day and 3 image generation times using Nano Banana Pro. However, the company has now removed these explicit numbers from its support page. According to the new policy, the daily limit for free access "may change based on demand." For a time, the image limit on Nano Banana Pro was reduced from 3 to 2, but later it was reduced back to 3. The company has clearly indicated that these limits will continue to be adjusted.
OpenAI also reduced Sora 2's video generation limit
Like Google, OpenAI has also reduced the video creation limit for Sora 2 free users from 30 to just 6. Sora team leader Bill Peebles wrote on social media X that the platform's "GPUs are melting," meaning that heavy usage is putting too much strain on the servers. Video generation requires high computing power, so this reduction was necessary.
Restrictions will be implemented first for free users
Google says that paid users will be given priority. If server pressure increases, limits on free accounts will be tightened first to maintain service quality. These updates clearly indicate that the company does not intend to remove free access, but limits may be further reduced if demand increases.
What's included in paid plans?
Paid subscriptions offer significantly more features than free users, such as more prompts, more image generation, a larger context window, deeper research and agent features, and high-end video generation capabilities. While free users only get a context window of 32,000 tokens, this increases to 1 million tokens in the Pro and Ultra plans.
Full Potential for Those Who Pay
AI is becoming a high-cost technology. Therefore, giants like Google and OpenAI are now adopting a model where free access is limited to entry-level features. The most advanced and powerful capabilities are available only in paid plans. Clearly, AI companies are gradually moving users towards a subscription model, where only those who pay will receive full capabilities.
