What began as a routine travel day turned into a full-blown crisis across India’s busiest airports as IndiGo cancelled nearly 200 flights leaving terminals overflowing with anxious exhausted passengers. Among them was YouTuber-actor Elvish Yadav who captured the chaos with a photo of a jam-packed airport and summed up the mood of countless travellers with four pointed words Waah IndiGo Waah (sic). The picture people pressed into queues luggage piled at corners long faces everywhere reflected the scale of disruption the airline is currently battling. IndiGo the country’s largest carrier is in the middle of widespread operational breakdowns caused by severe staffing shortages and scheduling mismatches. At Delhi airport alone 33 flights were cancelled while Bengaluru logged 73 cancellations. Hyderabad saw 68 Ahmedabad five and Kolkata four. Kolkata’s troubles did not end there the city reported 24 delayed flights including two international sectors to Singapore and Siem Reap in Cambodia. And this chaos wasn’t a one-day development. A day earlier IndiGo had already cancelled over 100 flights and delayed dozens across Delhi (38) Bengaluru (42) Mumbai (33) and Hyderabad (19). Why is IndiGo cancelling so many flights? The airline has been struggling with mounting staffing pressures leading to breakdowns in crew availability and disrupted schedules. As the situation worsened passenger complaints flooded social media videos of serpentine lines angry flyers and missed connections dominating the timelines. What is DGCA doing? The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has stepped in summoning IndiGo officials for a meeting at 2 pm to get clarity on the crisis. The aviation regulator is already examining the airline’s operational lapses given the scale of cancellations and the ripple effect across major hubs.
