A brand new sleeper train linking three exciting European cities in launching in Spring 2026 and will become the only direct rail connection between Switzerland and Scandinavia. Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has revealed that it is expanding its network with a night service connecting Basel to Copenhagen and Malmö, launching on 15 April 2026. Trains will run three times per week in each direction, all year-round and they are about to release their first batch of tickets.

SBB's EuroNight train will offer space for approximately 350 passengers in sleeping, couchette and seating cars, as well as in an accessible compartment. Single, double or triple compartments are available. Sleepy passengers can expect fresh sheets, a personal washbasin and breakfast included in their ticket.

Deluxe compartments come with those perks as well as a personal shower, toilet, toiletries and towels.

Couchette cars offer a slightly simpler version of the bed compartment option, while the seating cars will provide places to sit if a passenger does not book a bed.

This is being backed by the Swiss government, which says that it is glad to see SBB "expanding its international services and making climate-friendly travel to Northern Europe even more accessible" and adds that the introduction of the link "meets the growing demand for sustainable, cross-border mobility."

Departures will be from Basel SBB at 5.35pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, arriving in Malmö at 9.35am.

Trains from Malmö will depart at 6.57pm on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Mondays, arriving back in Basel SBB at 11.30am.

Along the way, intermediate stops will include Frankfurt, Hamburg and Copenhagen airport but the train will not call at Copenhagen Central Station due to time constraints, but the Danish capital can be reached from Copenhagen airport in approximately 15 minutes via another train.

Ticket sales for the new sleeper service are now being sold on the SBB website and app and at travel centres.

However, SBB has warned customers that the services will only go ahead if they receive parliamentary funding.

The cost for the Basel to Malmö sleeper train can vary significantly, but prices start at around £55 for a seat but higher for a sleeper cabin with reservation fees for sleeper options ranging from approximately €79.90 (£69) to over €479.90 (£418) per person, depending on the accommodation type. It is recommended to book well in advance, as fares are dynamic and can increase significantly closer to the travel date.
