Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) celebrated 28th Hepatitis Day at Vasant Kunj, Delhi. Its theme was Hepatitis Free New Generation. Under the Directorate of Family Welfare, Delhi Government, the event focused on awareness on control of hepatitis. Liver health checkup camp was also organized here. The program was led by Dr. Nikhil Kumar, Secretary, Health and Family Welfare. He stressed that primary education and community participation are necessary to make the new generation hepatitis free.
He explained in detail about hepatitis B infection among school students, nursing trainees and health care workers. Also said that it is important to seriously adopt measures to prevent this. only through constant investigation Liver Can be kept healthy. He said that already more than 15,000 students have been educated in this direction in many states. It is to be started in Delhi schools also.
Delhi ahead in prevention of hepatitis
Whereas ILBS Director Dr. S.K. Sarin said that the country's capital Delhi has historically been at the forefront in the prevention of hepatitis. Dr Sarin stressed that viral hepatitis is a major health challenge in India, where about 3 crore people are suffering from chronic hepatitis B. It is possible to overcome it through comprehensive testing and vaccination.

He also warned people about fatty liver disease. He told that every third person in Delhi is now suffering from Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). It is linked to diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. Dr. Sarin emphasized that Delhi is a city where there are a large number of public health clinics, people are educated, hence Delhi can be made a model for other states of the country.
Why is Hepatitis Day celebrated?
Hepatitis Day is celebrated every year on 4th December. This year the day marks the 26th year of the Yellow Ribbon Campaign launched by eminent hepatologist and social activist Dr. Shiv Kumar Sarin in 1998 in support of the fight against hepatitis. This year, ILBS is celebrating this historic day with the theme 'Hepatitis Elimination: A Social Responsibility'. Former President APJ Abdul Kalam, Dalai Lama and many other eminent personalities have supported this campaign.
