Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim will miss the opportunity to scout one of his midfield transfer targets in action next week when they face Wolves in the Premier League. The position is an area of priority for Jason Wilcox next month after investing over £200milllion elsewhere back in the summer.
United are expected to weigh up their options in January when the transfer window opens. The Reds bolstered their squad with a new goalkeeper, striker and two additional forwards in the previous window, but failed to secure a new central midfielder.
A potential deal forCarlos Baleba fell through after Brighton and Hove Albion's asking price was deemed too steep. Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson are also reportedly on United's radar following their standout performances this season.

However, another name has surfaced in recent months - Wolves' Brazilian sensation Joao Gomes. The 24-year-old was previously linked with a move to Old Trafford, prior to United's £50million acquisition of Manuel Ugarte in 2024.
Wolves currently languish at the bottom of the Premier League table after 14 games, having failed to secure a single win and amassing just two points. Speculation over the future of certain players has intensified ahead of the January transfer window, including Gomes, reports the Manchester Evening News.
According to The Telegraph, Wolves believe that Gomes' value is higher with the club in the Premier League, rather than as a Championship side if they suffer relegation. Other reports have suggested that the midfielder could command a fee close to £44m.
After their midweek loss to Nottingham Forest, the Wanderers are heading to Old Trafford on Monday in search of their first victory of the season. The match was seen as a chance for Amorim to watch Gomes play live before the transfer window, but that's now off the table.
Gomes received his fifth yellow card on Wednesday night, resulting in a one-match ban. This means Rob Edwards will have to delve into his squad for the journey to Old Trafford, with Marshall Munetsi tipped to step in.
Fellow Brazilian Andre is another Wolves player that both Amorim and United will be keeping tabs on. The midfielder has previously been linked with a move to United and is also rumoured to be on Arsenal and Liverpool's radar.
Whether United will be active in the January transfer window remains to be seen. However, potential exits could significantly impact their plans, with several players garnering attention.
Reports suggest that Kobbie Mainoo, Joshua Zirkzee, Ugarte and Tyrell Malacia could all be allowed to depart. None of the quartet have been regular starters this season, and ESPNhave reported that the club is open to offers.
With Bryan Mbeumo, Amad and Noussair Mazraoui set to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations, United could find themselves short-handed for the second half of the season, leaving Amorim in a tricky spot.
