Woman 'sexually assaulted' while running in UK market town as man and woman arrested

Police have made a double arrest in connection with a "serious sexual assault" on a woman as she was running in a popular UK market town.

Suffolk Police said the assault took place in Stowmarket on November 19 between 5.45am and 6am. A woman in her 30s was out on an early-morning run along a pathway off Iliffe Way when she was approached by an unknown man, who pulled her to the ground and sexually assaulted her. Two people have now been arrested as part of the investigation. A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and attempted rape, while a 49-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. The pair have been taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning, where they remain. The victim has been supported by specialist trained officers and has been assisting detectives with their enquiries.

Suffolk Police said: "Two people have been arrested in connection with a serious sexual assault that occurred in Stowmarket two weeks ago.

"The assault took place between 5:45am and 6am on Wednesday 19 November. A woman aged in her 30s was out running along a pathway off Iliffe Way when she was approached by an unknown man, who pulled her to the ground and sexually assaulted her.

"Today, Wednesday 3 December, two people have been arrested as part of the investigation.

"A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and attempted rape. A 49-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

"The pair have been taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning, where they remain."

Suffolk Police said that on November 23, a 38-year-old man was arrested in connection with the inquiry and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

He was released without charge two days later, on November 25, and will face no further police action.
