Following its theatrical debut and rising fan interest, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 received wide-ranging reviews from critics. The film premiered on December 5, 2025, and features Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, and Piper Rubio. Directed by Emma Tammi, it continues the story of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and its haunted animatronics. Critics evaluated the sequel’s focus on franchise lore, PG-13 horror elements, and its continuation of the supernatural storyline.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 reviews don’t support the sequel

Critics on Rotten Tomatoes have largely given Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 negative ratings. Jesse Hassenger (The Guardian) gave it a 1/4 and wrote, “By all evidence, Cawthon is singularly unqualified to write towards human experiences that aren’t marble-mouthed attempts at references.”

Alonso Duralde (The Film Verdict) stated, “Viewers who aren’t thrilled by recognizing new characters from an old game, and who expect more from a movie than a handful of PG-13 jump scares, are advised to spend their night anywhere that Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 isn’t screening.”

Avi Offer (NYC Movie Guru) called it “an asinine, uninspired, unnecessary and anemic B-movie that neither provides enough chill, thrills or cool kills.” Frank Scheck (The Hollywood Reporter) said, “The film’s cast deserves credit, not so much for their performances as their ability to keep a straight face throughout.”

According to Allison Rose (FlickDirect), “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 plays best for die-hard fans; for everyone else, it’s a stitched-together sequel with few scares and even fewer surprises.” Aaron Neuwirth (We Live Entertainment) commented, “It would just be a relief to be able to play along rather than continually see these efforts as instant kills.”

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’s Rotten Tomatoes score is abysmal

While both films received low critical reception, the sequel has an even lower aggregate score. The original film earned an 86% audience score, while Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has not yet received one.
