Cholesterol is essential for our bodies, but it becomes a problem when its levels in the blood increase (high cholesterol). As cholesterol levels rise, it gradually accumulates in the arteries and causes blockages.
Usually, there are no obvious symptoms of high cholesterol in the early stages, but as levels continue to rise; the body begins to show some signs. Let's learn about these signs of high cholesterol.
Pain or cramps in the legs
When cholesterol levels rise, it can cause plaque to build up in the arteries of the legs, restricting blood flow. This condition is called peripheral artery disease. It can cause pain, cramping, heaviness, or numbness in the legs when walking or climbing stairs. This pain may subside with rest but returns when you exercise.
Chest pain or heaviness
High cholesterol can narrow the arteries that supply blood to the heart. This can cause chest pressure, tightness, heaviness, or pain, known as angina. This pain usually occurs during physical or emotional stress and subsides with rest. Don't take this lightly; it could be a sign of a heart attack.
Difficulty in breathing
When cholesterol buildup impairs heart function, the body doesn't receive the proper amount of oxygenated blood. This can lead to shortness of breath during normal activities like walking, household chores, or even minor exertion. This symptom can also be a sign of heart disease or heart failure.
Yellowish bumps on the skin
High cholesterol can sometimes show up on the skin. Soft, yellowish bumps, called xanthomas, may appear on the skin, especially around the eyes. These are deposits of fat and cholesterol and are often seen in people with hypercholesterolemia.
Dizziness or loss of balance
High cholesterol can affect the arteries that supply blood to the brain. This can lead to insufficient oxygen supply to the brain, which can cause dizziness, lightheadedness, and sudden loss of balance. These symptoms may also indicate a transient ischemic attack.
