The Met Office has issued a new yellow weather warning for rain. The alert will be in place for 24 hours, between 6pm on Monday, December 8, and Tuesday, December 9.

The weather agency warned the heavy rain could prompt flooding, which could lead to damage to buildings, travel disruptions and even danger to life in some instances.

Outbreaks of rain will become persistent and heavy on Monday night into Tuesday morning, and whilst the rain may be more intermittent during Tuesday daytime some occasional heavy bursts will still be possible, warns the Met Office. The forecaster says that 80mm of rain could fall over Dartmoor and high ground in south Wales with even 100mm possible in exposed areas. While temperatures are expected to remain mild, gusty winds are also forecast.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "There will naturally be some variation in rainfall totals across the area, but accumulations of 20-40 mm are likely in quite a few places, with 60-80 mm over Dartmoor and high ground in south Wales. There is a small chance of 80-100 mm falling over the most exposed, prone hills.

"Given the saturated nature of the ground, this is likely to lead to some flooding in places and transport disruption. Rain will also be accompanied by strengthening southerly winds, which may exacerbate impacts."

The yellow weather warning covers south West England aswell as south and west Wales.
