Nathan McSweeney sent a clear message to the Australian selectors with a commanding performance against England Lions in the ongoing unofficial Test at Allan Border Field, Brisbane. The recently dropped opener smashed his maiden first-class double century, finishing unbeaten on 222 and turning frustration into a dominant display of skill and temperament.
After England Lions were bowled out for just 166 on Day 1, McSweeney came in at number three for Australia A. He ended the first day on 40*, but Day 2 belonged entirely to him. With growing confidence and calm control, he reshaped the innings, compiling 222, the highest first-class score of his career*. His previous best was 127* for South Australia in the 2024/25 Sheffield Shield.
McSweeney showed patience initially before asserting dominance over the bowlers. After an early wicket saw Matt Renshaw depart, McSweeney added 72 runs with Campbell Kellaway (71). He then stitched together a 135-run partnership with Cooper Connolly, who narrowly missed his maiden first-class century by just 12 runs.
This innings could mark a turning point in McSweeney’s career. He made his Test debut in the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy but failed to register a fifty in six innings, leading to his omission in favor of Sam Konstas. Since then, he has not featured for Australia, with Jake Weatherald called up for the Ashes squad instead.
Australia A’s innings received further reinforcement from Beau Webster, also recently released from the Australian squad for the Brisbane Test. Webster partnered with McSweeney for 117 runs for the fourth wicket, followed by a third big stand with pacer Xavier Bartlett, who scored a career-best 83. Their combined effort helped Australia A reach a colossal 554/7, securing a lead of 388 runs.
McSweeney’s performance not only showcased his class but also sent a loud signal to the selectors: he is ready to stake a serious claim for a return to the national side.
