Even the all-important fairy lights can have an impact on the signal that beams around rooms, and it's vital to make sure your router is ready for the Christmas onslaught. This latest alert has been issued by UK Internet Service Provider (ISP) TalkTalk, who says 90 percent of Brits are unaware that festive lights could be contributing to buffering over the holidays.

"As the festive season approaches, reliable connectivity at home is more important than ever - whether you're last minute online gift shopping, keeping the family entertained with films, or perfecting your turkey with an online cooking video," said Steve Wallage, Chief Product Officer at TalkTalk.

"While we absolutely love festive decorations, it's worth being aware that fairy lights can sometimes interact with your Wi-Fi signal if too close to your router. The good news is, by making a few smart adjustments, you can ensure your home network is able to handle holiday demands, keeping everyone happily connected and online, without having to tone down any of your Christmas decorations."

If you are already in the festive spirit or about to start sticking up the tinsel, then there are some simple tips to try.

TalkTalk says it's vital to give your router as much space as possible and not crowd it with gifts or tuck it under the tree.

"Help your signal reach every corner by ensuring your router has a little space," TalkTalk said.

"It's best positioned away from anything that might absorb or block its signal, like dense Christmas trees, sparkling metallic tinsel, or those beautiful twinkling fairy lights."

Next, you must make sure your Wi-Fi device stays upright, as lying it flat will mean the signal could be lost.

Another top tip is to never switch it off. "Leave your router on around the clock - this ensures it receives all crucial updates and maintains a steady connection, keeping your speeds happily humming," TalkTalk added.

Finally, it's a really bad idea to place your router on the window ledge. Direct sunlight can cause overheating, and a visible location isn't the most secure for your password. Instead, help your router perform its best by finding a discreet, central spot in your home.
