Belgian football legend, Glen De Boeck, has tragically died at the age of 54. The esteemed player, who earned 36 caps for Belgium during his illustrious career, suffered a severe brain haemorrhage that left him in a coma for three days. He collapsed at his home on Friday and was swiftly taken to Antwerp University Hospital.
Sadly, the damage was too extensive for him to recover. His family confirmed that the former defender died on Sunday night, surrounded by his loved ones. He leaves behind two daughters, Bo and Caro.
De Boeck kicked off his career with local club FC Boom before moving to Mechelen.
In 1995, Belgian titans Anderlecht signed the defender, where he served as captain and played for a decade until a serious knee injury forced his retirement in 2005.
After retiring, De Boeck took up the role of assistant manager at Anderlecht before launching his own managerial career.
His first managerial stint was at Cercle Brugge, where he stayed for three years before taking the reins at Germinal Beerschot.
De Boeck later managed Dutch side VVV-Venlo before returning to Belgium to manage Beveren, Mouscron, KV Kortrijk and Lokeren.
His final managerial post saw him return to Belgian Pro League club Kortrijk in 2023. He then became a well-known pundit on Belgian television.
The De Boeck family have suffered a heartbreaking year of personal loss. Earlier this year, Glen lost his father Louis, aged 80, after a prolonged illness.
During the funeral, De Boeck's mother Louisette suffered a collapse due to a brain haemorrhage.
Doctors later found out she was also battling pancreatic cancer, and sadly, she died a month after her husband.
