Delhi Government To Resume EV Subsidy: The Delhi government plans to open a new site to make it easier to issue outstanding subsidies, which would be a huge relief for EV customers in the city. The national government’s subsidy is still in effect, but the Delhi government’s specified state-level incentives have been put on hold, making EVs less inexpensive than first anticipated.

Status of Pending Dues and Subsidies

There is a sizable backlog of claims since the state stopped paying out subsidies in January 2024.

Pending Amount: It is anticipated that subsidies from the previous government totaling around Rs 49 crore are still outstanding.

Legal Action: Although a settlement had previously proven difficult, the payment delay has resulted in litigation, which has reached the courts.

Current Impact: As a result of these incentives not being paid, the administration’s attempts to encourage electric mobility were not reaching their full potential since cars continued to be more expensive than anticipated.

Background of Policy

The former government introduced the Electric Vehicle Policy in August 2020 to promote the adoption of green transportation. Included in the incentive scheme were

Electric Vehicles: The first 1,000 automobiles registered were eligible for a subsidy of up to Rs 1.5 lakh.

Two-wheelers and Rickshaws: Two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, and battery-operated rickshaws were all eligible for a Rs 30,000 subsidy.

The Way Forward: Relaunching the Portal

Preparations to restart the subsidies are almost finished, according to government sources. The site, which has not been used since the previous government’s time, will shortly be launched by the Transport Department.

System Upgrades: To simplify the procedure and make it simpler for applicants to collect their subsidies, modifications have been made to the site.

Official Launch: At the official launch ceremony, the Chief Minister will provide comprehensive details about the new system.

Strategic Objectives and Pollution Management

The administration’s increased emphasis on lowering vehicle emissions is consistent with the reintroduction of subsidies.

EV Capital Vision: By 2026, the Delhi government hopes to establish the city as the “Electric Vehicle Capital” after changing its original goal. This comes after the previous government failed to reach the 2025 goal.

Central Push: In an effort to reduce pollution, the Central Government recently called a conference and urged all states—with a focus on Delhi—to promote electric cars more quickly.
