Prayagraj: The Prayagraj Mela Authority intends to transform the next Magh Mela into a magnificent and contemporary fair like to Mahakumbh by lighting the city’s 23 main avenues and alleys.

The assignment has been given to Prayagraj Municipal Corporation to do by January 3. The illumination has changed the appearance of the trees along the roadsides.
“Roads in Sangam city and their lighting systems are being given a facelift for grandeur to welcome tourists coming to the Magh Mela,” said Dr. Sanjay Katiyar, head engineer (electrical) in the mechanical department of Prayagraj Municipal Corporation.

Similar to what was employed during Maha Kumbh 2025, a system of neon and spiral lights has been introduced. The system illuminates the whole tree at night with various themed lights on the trunks, branches, and leaves of 260 trees on major city highways.

This spectacular lighting installation will be visible to tourists and devotees who are going from Prayagraj Airport to the Sangam. Devotees will also be drawn to patterns including conch shells, chakras, maces, tridents, swords, and other symbols on 23 city highways, six ROBs (road overbridges), and two flyovers.

The Magh Mela 2026 will also make use of the mechanism that was put in place during the Mahakumbh. Since these lights are still covered by a one-year warranty, no further funding has been set aside for this.

In addition to the Magh Mela area, all of the wards’ main highways and streets will have better illumination. This is being carried out by PMC as part of a previously authorized Rs 150 crore plan for both original and enlarged city areas.

According to Katiyar, “A budget of approximately Rs 25 crore had already been allocated for improving street lighting in 28 wards of the expanded area.” The Jhunsi, Phaphamau, and Naini regions are getting more than 11,000 streetlights built. The mela administration’s more than 4,400 lamps are also being used.

Regardless of the path they follow, the goal is to make sure that the streets and alleys are well-lit for guests coming for the Magh Mela.
