Bareilly: On the provision of a bond of Rs 1 lakh each, a Bareilly court granted conditional release to Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, the head of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council, and another individual who were charged with inciting violence in Uttar Pradesh over “I Love Muhammad” posters.
On September 26, Mahila Police station sub-inspector Komal Kundu filed a complaint against Tauqeer Raza, Nadeem, and other individuals.
On Friday, Additional District Government Counsel (ADGC) Mahesh Singh Yadav said that both defendants had requested bail in the court of Special Judge (E C Act) Amrita Shukla via their attorneys.
The accused would not be permitted to leave the city without the investigating officer’s consent, the court said while granted conditional release. According to him, the investigating officer will have the authority to ask the court to cancel the accused’s bail if they refuse to help with the investigation. According to him, Maulana Tauqeer Raza will stay in prison since his bail is still outstanding in six other cases, despite having been granted bail in four of them thus far.
According to reports, a disagreement over “I Love Muhammad” banners caused violence to break out in Bareilly on September 26.
Police said that rioters assembled in several parts of the city, threw petrol bombs at officers, stone-pelted and fired at them, and stole firearms, including a riot-control pistol.
The disturbance wounded almost two dozen police officers.
Ten instances were reported at the police stations in Kotwali, Baradari, Premnagar, Cantt, and Qila that evening. Two significant cases that were recorded at Kotwali and Baradari subsequently had their investigations moved to the criminal branch.
According to police, 55 more identities came to light throughout the investigation, while 19 suspects were first mentioned in the case. Of them, 38 defendants have a chargesheet and supporting documentation filed against them.
According to authorities, Raza is now being held in Fatehgarh prison, while Nafees and a number of other suspects are being held at Bareilly jail.
