The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of Zubeen Garg, in a charge sheet filed in a Guwahati court on Friday, has accused four accused, including the singer’s secretary Siddharth Sharma and festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahant, of murder. Garg’s band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahant have also been charged with murder. Shyamkanu Mahant was the chief organizer of the North East India Festival which Garg participated in in Singapore, where he died under mysterious circumstances while swimming in the sea on 19 September. Garg’s cousin and suspended Assam Police officer Sandipan Garg has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder in a charge sheet filed in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate.

The singer’s two personal security officers, Nandeshwar Bora and Prabin Baishya, have been booked under Section 31C of the BNS, which relates to criminal breach of trust by misappropriation of money or property entrusted to them. The SIT led by Special DGP MP Gupta has so far arrested a total of seven people in connection with Garg’s death. More than 300 witnesses have also been questioned as part of the investigation. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters in Kokrajhar that the promise made to the people of Assam regarding Garg’s death has been fulfilled with the Special Investigation Team filing the charge sheet before the deadline. Sarma said, ‘We had taken the responsibility of providing justice to Zubeen Garg and we have accomplished it with the SIT filing the charge sheet in the court today in record time.’
