Saphala Ekadashi fasting story

According to mythology, in ancient times there was a city named Champavati, which was ruled by a king named Mahishman. The king had four sons, out of which the eldest son Lumpak was extremely evil and a great sinner. The people of the kingdom were extremely saddened by his misdeeds, but no one had the courage to complain about him to the king.

One day King Mahishman came to know about his son’s misdeeds. Angered by this, he expelled Lumpak from the state. After being expelled from the kingdom, Lumpak started living in a forest. That forest was dear to the gods and goddesses and there was an ancient Peepal tree, under which Lumpak used to rest. It is believed that the gods reside in the Peepal tree.

Ekadashi fast completed unknowingly

One day, strong cold winds started blowing in the forest, due to which Lumpak fell unconscious. He remained lying there till the next day. He regained consciousness due to the heat of the sun and went out in search of food. That day he did not have the strength to hunt, so he plucked some fruits from the tree and brought them back.

However, despite feeling hungry, he could not eat fruits because he ate only non-vegetarian food. Ultimately he placed those fruits in the roots of the Peepal tree and offered them to God with a sad heart. After this he remained awake there the whole night crying. In this way, he did not consume anything for more than 24 hours and unknowingly his Ekadashi fast was completed. Actually, that day was of Ekadashi only.

Lord Vishnu’s grace and change in life

Lord Vishnu was extremely pleased with Lompak’s fasting and night vigil and he destroyed all his sins. Next morning a divine chariot appeared in front of Lumpak and a voice came from the sky. It was said in Akashvani that by the grace of Lord Narayana all his sins have been destroyed and he should return to his father and get the kingdom.

Hearing this, Lumpak was happy and went to his father King Mahishman and narrated the whole story. The king was extremely happy after hearing what his son said and he again handed over his kingdom to him. Since then the tradition of observing Saphala Ekadashi fast is considered to be the beginning.
