WhatsApp is a popular messaging app among millions of users in India. Due to its popularity, the platform has also become a hotspot for fraudsters and scammers. To combat this, WhatsApp reviews complaints every month and bans accounts based on that. Once again, taking major action, WhatsApp has banned 80 lakh accounts in a month.
According to WhatsApp’s new transparency report, this instant messaging application owned by Meta had banned 84,58,000 users in India in August. This report has been published in compliance with Rule 4(1)(d) and Rule 3A(7) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
Between August 1 and August 31, WhatsApp has blocked a total of 84,58,000 Indian accounts. Of those, 16,61,000 accounts were banned proactively, meaning these accounts were identified and action taken before any user complaints were received.
WhatsApp reported that, in August 2024, it had received 10,707 user complaints through its complaint system. Out of which WhatsApp took action on 93 complaints. Users send complaints to WhatsApp’s India Grievance Officer through email etc.
