New Delhi, 5 January. In Sanatan Dharma, the festival of Sakat Chauth or Sankashti Chaturthi is celebrated with devotion on the Chaturthi date of Krishna Paksha of Magh month. This fast is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, son of Gauri, the remover of obstacles and the giver of happiness and prosperity. There is a religious belief that by worshiping Lord Ganesha and fasting as per the rituals on this day, all the obstacles in life are removed and success is achieved in every area of life.

Mothers especially observe this fast for the long life and well-being of their children. After moonrise, the fast is completed by seeing the moon and offering Arghya. Chaturthi Tithi will start from 8:01 am on January 6 and will continue till 6:52 am on January 7. On this day, moonrise will occur at 8:54 pm.

Sakat Chauth fast is mainly observed by mothers for the long life, health and happiness and prosperity of their sons. In North India it is also called Sakat Chauth or Tilkut Chauth, while in Maharashtra it is known as Lambodar Sankashti Chaturthi. This festival has special significance because Chaturthi of Krishna Paksha is considered to please Lord Ganesha. By worshiping Gauri Putra on Sakat Chauth, all the troubles of life are removed and happiness and prosperity is achieved. Mothers also worship Sakat Mata, who protects their children. By fasting on this day, devotees wish for freedom from troubles.

It is mentioned in the religious scriptures how to observe a fast dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Sakat Chauth fast is observed from sunrise to moonrise. Many devotees observe Nirjala fast, while some consume fruits or satvik food. For this, take bath in the morning, wear clean clothes and take a pledge to fast. Remember Lord Ganesha throughout the day. After the formal worship in the evening, see the moon and offer Arghya with milk and water. After this break the fast. After this, offer incense sticks, roli, perfume, durva, flowers, sandalwood, abeer, cloves and incense sticks. Gauri’s son is very fond of sesame-jaggery laddus, modaks or tilkuts, definitely offer them.

After worship, chant the mantra Gan Gan Ganapataye Namah in front of Lord Ganesha and recite Sankat Nashan Ganesh Stotra, Ganesh Atharvashirsha Stotra. Read or listen to the fasting story. In the evening, at the time of moonrise, offer water mixed with milk to the moon. After the puja, distribute Bhog Prasad and break the fast by taking the Prasad.
