Dhaka, January 5. The Mohammad Yunus-led interim government in Bangladesh has indefinitely banned the telecast of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the most popular franchise league of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The Bangladesh government took this decision on Monday after Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman was dropped from the upcoming season of IPL amid the ongoing political standoff with India due to recent developments. As a result, Bangladeshi sports fans will no longer be able to watch IPL matches legally on any TV channel or streaming platform.
It is noteworthy that Mustafizur was bought by Kolkata franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for Rs 9.20 crore during the IPL 2026 mini auction held in Abu Dhabi last December. On Saturday, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devjit Saikia said that the board had asked the KKR franchise to release Mustafizur citing recent developments. But this decision was not liked by the Bangladesh cricket fraternity.
The Bangladesh government said in its order, ‘In view of this matter, it is informed that a directive has come from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), in which Bangladeshi star player Mustafizur Rahman has been asked to be dropped from the Kolkata Knight Riders team for the proposed Indian Premier League (IPL) from 26 March 2026.’
It further said, ‘There is no real reason known for such a decision of the Indian Cricket Board and this decision has brought sadness, disappointment and anger to the people of Bangladesh. In these circumstances, it is requested to stop the broadcast/telecast of all matches and events of the Indian Premier League as per instructions till further orders. This order has been issued with the approval of the correct authority and in the public interest.
Bangladesh team will not come to India to participate in T20 World Cup
It is noteworthy that after the Rahman controversy, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has also refused to send its national team to India for participation in the ICC T20 World Cup proposed next month. BCB has also written a letter to the International Cricket Council (ICC) requesting that the apex body of cricket shift its T20 World Cup matches from India to Sri Lanka.
