U.K.-headquartered hotel operator IHG said it plans to open an 817-room triple-branded hotel development in Osaka in 2029 to capitalize on growing travel demand amid a record number of tourist arrivals in Japan.

InterContinental, Kimpton and Holiday Inn Resort will be situated in a prime location near Universal Studios Japan, known as the most visited theme park in Asia, and within easy reach of central Osaka.

The hotel complex is expected to include conference and exhibition facilities, which are expected to boost demand for places to leisure and events-driven travel.

Osaka is famous for its incredible food, dubbed “Japan’s Kitchen”, vibrant nightlife and entertainment, rich history marked by Osaka Castle, friendly locals, and lively shopping districts, offering a blend of modern excitement with deep cultural heritage.

Opened on March 31, 2001, Universal Studios Japan is one of six Universal Studios theme parks worldwide and was the first to open outside the U.S.

In 2024, it hosted 16 million visitors, making it the third-most visited theme park in the world behind Magic Kingdom and Disneyland, and the most visited theme park in Asia.

Japan welcomed an estimated 39.06 million foreign visitors from January to November, surpassing last year’s record of 36.87 million.

The country aims to welcome 60 million international visitors by 2030, a 50% increase from the current figure.
