Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, while making a sharp attack on the attitude of western countries during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, said that many distant countries express concern about tensions in others’ areas, but shy away from looking at the risks and violence present in their own areas. Jaishankar made the remarks during an interaction with members of the Indian community in Luxembourg on Wednesday (January 7).

Jaishankar said countries that are willing to work with India in a positive and cooperative manner should be dealt with in the same spirit, while countries that are indulging in policies and activities like Pakistan have to be dealt with differently. “So those who are willing to work with us, are helpful and positive, we should deal with them in the same way. And those who do things like Pakistan, we should deal with them in a different way,” he said.

The External Affairs Minister also satirized the tendency of Western countries to advise others on local or regional conflicts, but often without introspection. He said, “Now, to what extent what is happening in the rest of the world affects them, it is difficult to say. Sitting at a distance, people talk, sometimes thoughtfully, sometimes without thinking, sometimes in their own selfishness, sometimes carelessly. This will continue.”

Jaishankar said that in today’s era, countries take decisions based on their direct interests rather than idealism. He commented, “But at the end of the day I can tell you that countries today have become more – I wouldn’t say they have become more selfish – but they will do only what directly benefits them. They will give you free advice. If something happens they will say, no, please don’t do that. We worry if tensions rise.”

Referring to the international advisories received during Operation Sindoor, he said that India accepted it as the reality of global politics. Jaishankar said, “Sometimes you hear people say, like what happened during Operation Sindoor. If you ask them, are you really concerned, why not look at your own region? What are the levels of violence there, how many risks are taken, and how concerned are the rest of us about what you are doing. But that is the nature of the world. People do not do what they say. And we have to accept it in the same spirit.”

During his address, Jaishankar also talked about the broader context of India-Luxembourg relations. He noted the growing partnership between the two countries in the fields of politics, trade and technology. Later, in a post on social media platform

Jaishankar’s comments come at a time when India is emphasizing strategic autonomy and a realistic approach in its foreign policy, especially on issues to regional security and terrorism.
