Former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav has promised that if his party wins the 2027 assembly elections, he will give Rs 40,000 every year to women. He promised that when his government was in UP, he was giving Rs 500 to women, in the next election they were promised Rs 1,000 but the government could not be formed. They had promised to give Rs 2.5 thousand in the Lok Sabha elections, that too did not happen. Now he has said that he will give Rs 40 thousand to the women.
Akhilesh Yadav is currently in the opposition. Assembly elections in UP are also going to be held in 2027. Can the public believe the promises of the opposition in election states? If we look at the statistics, in most of the states the public has less faith in the claims of the opposition. Let us understand how the results of the assembly elections of Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Bihar prove this.
Where could the public not believe the promises of the opposition?
Bihar: The public rejected the promises of the opposition outright.
India alliance made many revolutionary promises in Bihar. India Alliance’s CM candidate Tejashwi Yadav had promised that he will provide a government job to every household, more than 1 crore jobs in the state, Rs 30 thousand per month to Jeevika Didis, free electricity up to 200 units, the promise of giving Rs 2,500 per month to every woman under Maa-Beti Yojana, Mai Behan Maan Yojana was also not accepted.
Public’s verdict: State Chief Minister Nitish Kumar approved many schemes just a few months before the announcement of elections. The public expressed confidence in the promises of free electricity, good governance, Lakhpati Didi, Jeevika Didi, 1 crore jobs. In the results, out of 243 seats, 202 seats came to NDA’s account, Tejashwi Yadav-led India Alliance was reduced to 35 seats.
Maharashtra: Public rejected the big promises of Maha Vikas Aghadi
Assembly elections were held in the state in November 2024. Three parties were included in the opposition alliance. Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar). It was promised by all three parties that if the government is formed, women will get Rs 3,000 per month under the Mahalakshmi scheme. There will also be free bus travel for women and girls.
MVA had promised that loans of farmers up to Rs 3 lakh would be waived off. An incentive amount of Rs 50,000 will be given on timely repayment of loan. Caste based census will be conducted. The limit of 50 percent reservation will be removed. Health insurance up to Rs 25 lakh and free medicines were guaranteed. Unemployed youth were promised financial assistance of up to Rs 4,000 per month.
Public’s verdict: MVA reduced to 50 seats. Mahayuti won 80 percent of the seats in the state with 230 seats. The public expressed confidence in the Chief Minister Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana. On Maratha reservation, the public expressed more trust in the ruling party than in the claims of the opposition.
Jharkhand: Public could not believe NDA’s promise
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha is in power in Jharkhand. The government also faced a crisis, when suddenly Hemant Soren was arrested and he had to go to jail. Champai Soren became the Chief Minister. Elections were held in this state also in November 2024. The BJP-led NDA alliance made many promises. The NDA promised to provide financial assistance of Rs 2,100 every month, free LPG cylinder on Diwali-Rakshabandhan and Rs 500 throughout the rest of the year under the ‘Gogo-Didi Scheme’ if the government is formed in the state. NDA promised that 5 lakh new jobs will be provided in the state. Uniform Civil Code, Diamond Quadrilateral Expressway, health insurance will be given to the poor.
Public’s verdict: The public expressed confidence in Jharkhand’s Maiya Samman Yojana. Even before the elections, Rs 1,000 were released every month. The public did not trust the opposition’s promises. The result was that in this state of 81 assembly seats, the Indian Alliance got 56 seats, while the NDA could get only 24 seats.
What are the exceptions?
There was Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi. The Aam Aadmi Party had made many populist promises in the 2024 assembly elections. The election results came in favor of BJP. The Bharatiya Janata Party government in Himachal Pradesh was in power from 2017 to 2022. When assembly elections were held in 2022, the public expressed more confidence in the promises of Congress. The election results of Punjab also remained similar. In the year 2024, there was Naveen Patnaik government in Odisha, he made many promises but the opposition came to power. Karnataka is out of power in the year 2023. The 10-year-old Bharat Rashtra Samithi government in Telangana was ousted and Congress came to power.
