BJP’s attack on the renovation of Somnath temple

New Delhi. BJP has once again targeted former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru regarding the renovation of Somnath Temple. BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi on Wednesday said Nehru did not show interest in reconstructing the Somnath temple after independence because of his appeasement politics. He claimed that Somnath temple was looted by Mahmud Ghaznavi and Alauddin Khilji in the past, but in independent India, Nehru hated Lord Somnath the most.

Nehru’s letter and claim

Trivedi referred to the letter written by Pandit Nehru to Pakistan Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan on April 21, 1951. He said that Nehru misrepresented the story of the Somnath gates by calling Khan the beloved Nawabzada. He said that Nehru had also written that no activity like construction of Somnath temple was taking place. Trivedi raised the question that what fear did Nehru have from Liaquat Ali Khan that he had to write a letter regarding Somnath Temple.

refuse government aid

Sudhanshu Trivedi alleged that Pandit Nehru refused to provide help to the Somnath Trust by writing letters to the Indian embassies. This also included a request for water from the river for the consecration ceremony. He said that Nehru refused permission to use Indus river water for the consecration of the temple and ordered permission to be taken before any such request in future.

Congress’s opposition and clarification

Congress has opposed these claims of BJP, calling them false. The party said that Pandit Nehru had adopted the policy with the consent of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel that government money should not be used in the construction of religious places. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh shared a video in which these allegations have been answered in detail. Ramesh also questioned what was the reason for not inviting the then President Kovind to the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Ram temple and President Draupadi Murmu to the inauguration.
