‘Pune is now a city of goons,’ why has Sanjay Raut said this?

Before the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut made a scathing attack on BJP and Ajit Pawar’s NCP in a public meeting on Saturday. He described Pune city as a city of goons. Sanjay Raut claimed that once upon a time Pune was a beautiful city but now it is a city of goons. He has alleged that hooliganism has increased in the city because of Ajit Pawar and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders.

Sanjay Raut also claimed that BJP and Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit faction) win elections in Pune only because of hooliganism. He also said that BJP and NCP have fielded relatives of goons and terrorists in the elections. Sanjay Raut said that if he meets Dawood Ibrahim, then these people can distribute tickets to his relatives also.

Sanjay Raut said, ‘Earlier Pune was a beautiful city, now it is a city of goons. BJP and Ajit Pawar’s party cannot win elections without hooliganism. These parties have given tickets to relatives of many gangsters. If these people had met Dawood Ibrahim, they would have given tickets to his brother or relatives also. These people can also give tickets to Chhota Shakeel or Chhota Rajan.

Why is Sanjay Raut saying this about Pune?

About 2650 people had applied for character certificate before Mumbai Police for Pune Municipal Corporation elections. This certificate is mandatory to contest elections. Of these, there are 1,560 candidates who have some kind of crime registered against them. About 59 percent people have some kind of crime registered against them. Of these, only 60 have serious crimes registered against them.
 

According to a Times of India report, 20 candidates have serious crimes like forgery, extortion and assault registered against them. Police say that cases have been registered against 1,500 people only for political or agitating reasons. These people were caught protesting for civic issues like water, roads, potholes. A total of 1,165 candidates have fielded in Pune Municipal Corporation.

Police will keep an eye on 20 candidates

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has ordered that the police is keeping an eye on 20 serious criminal candidates. The police are keeping an eye on whether these people are threatening the voters. He has been given conditional bail. The police are also keeping an eye on whether the bail conditions are being followed or not. The police clearly said that if any candidate breaks the law during the elections, strict action will be taken against him.

When are the municipal elections in Maharashtra?

Elections for 29 municipal corporations are going to be held in Maharashtra on 15 January 2026. Holiday has been declared across the state for voting. 1700 candidates are contesting elections on 227 wards in BMC.
