Malaysia expects to attract 4.6 million Indonesia tourists this year as part of the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign after recording positive results last year.
Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia Datuk Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin said the target is based on steady growth in Indonesian visitors in recent years, coupled with a series of promotional activities throughout 2026, Malay Mail reported.
In 2024, Malaysia received around 4.1 million tourists from Indonesia, and last year, up to November, some 3.8 million were recorded.
There are currently 396 AirAsia direct flights from 16 Indonesian cities to Malaysia weekly, with a total seat capacity of 72,822, Named reported.
Indonesia AirAsia is also planning to open a new route to Malaysia, which is expected to be finalized by mid year.
Malaysia has surpassed Thailand for the second consecutive year to become the champion in regional tourism race in 2025 thanks to its flexible visa policy and infrastructure improvements.
Malaysia welcomed 38.3 million foreign arrivals in the first 11 months of 2025, exceeding the total recorded for the whole of 2024, according to Tourism Malaysia under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
