January is the time of year when many motorists discover condensation inside their vehicles, prompting a search for quick solutions to clear it. However, if your car frequently fogs up and you're unsure how to tackle it, there's a straightforward method that may prevent it from occurring altogether.

The RAC (Royal Automobile Club) suggests that applying a simple household item to your car windscreen could help, and the solution might come as a surprise. When used properly, this hack can prevent condensation from forming, making it invaluable expert guidance during the winter period.

Previously, motorists have discussed the trick on social media platforms. On Reddit, one user was eager to reveal how an unexpected household product can help stop windows from fogging up.

They explained: "Shaving foam for car windows. I don't know if this already has been posted, but I only recently came across this life hack.

"So, here in the Netherlands, the fines for fogged windows are pretty high. And, if you drive an older car like me, you probably suffer from fogged up windows [at] this time of year.

"Use shaving foam to stop this! Just put some on your window and spread it with a clean cloth, piece of sponge or whatever! Wipe it completely off, and it should work fine!"

Fellow users were quick to respond, with one commenting: "I've used it on my bathroom mirror for almost 10 years. Never did I think to use it on my car windshield."

Another user responded: "You, my good sir, have made my life a little easier. Thank you and enjoy my little bitty upvote, as I bet you will get plenty more."

A third person chimed in with: "Oh wow, thank you for that. Have tried everything else." A fourth also noted: "Those who race motorcycles have used it forever. It keeps your goggles from fogging over."

The technique has been validated by the RAC, which confirms the product's effectiveness when applied correctly. However, they stress the importance of following specific guidelines to ensure road safety.

The crucial factor is using the right amount whilst maintaining clear visibility of the road ahead. This simple hack could significantly reduce your morning preparation time.

What does the RAC say?

According to the RAC website: "Take a clean towel and place a dollop of shaving foam onto it. Wipe the windscreen with the towel, spreading the shaving foam over the entire surface.

"Then take another clean towel and wipe off the shaving foam completely. This protective barrier should help stop your windscreen from misting up, but it will need to be regularly reapplied to continue to work.

"Another useful item to help demist your car is a demister pad. These can be purchased over at the RAC Shop." For optimal results, the foam must be applied thinly and evenly across the interior surface of windscreens, mirrors or windows.

Following application, use a clean, dry cloth to remove the foam completely. The glass must be buffed until entirely clear and free of streaks, ensuring nothing obstructs your vision whilst driving.
