mumbai, 16m january 2026: The film ‘Sonchidiya’, released in the year 2019 and presenting the reality of Chambalna Kotra, may have been a flop at the box office at that time, but today it is considered among the best films of Hindi cinema. Recently, during an interview, the director of this film, Abhishek Chaubey, while sarcastically saying on the environment of today’s cinema, had said that if he had thought of making this film today, both its production and release would have been impossible.
Abhishek Chaubey had said in an interview, “There was a time when actors used to take risks to show the reality of the character. If ‘Sonchidiya’ had been made today, it would have been difficult both to make and release it. Now there are no audiences who like these types of films.”
He further added, “If I were to make this film today, I would not even find actors. 15-20 years ago, people used to come to watch films based on reality and filmmakers also had the opportunity to experiment. ‘Sonchidiya’ was probably the last film at that time when the audience was hungry for such films.”
The co-writer of the film, Sudeep Sharma had also said that, “Today no one would give even 10 rupees to make this film. Even if he had made the film by sending funds as per his wish, the audience would not have come to the cinema hall to watch it.”
Based on the life and struggle of Chambal dacoits during the period of 1975, the film featured veteran actors like late actor Sushant Singh Rajput, Manoj Bajpayee, Bhumi Pednekar and Ashutosh Rana. Although this film may have failed at the box office, but due to Sushant Singh Rajput’s acting and Abhishek Chaubey’s direction, this film is very popular among cinema fans today.
