New Delhi. India’s important regional connectivity project has once again suffered a severe blow due to the ongoing unrest in Iran amid violent protests. According to a report, India’s 10-year-old participation in building Iran’s Chabahar Port has almost ended. It is noteworthy that Iran’s Chabahar port is an ambitious project for India. Now the Indian Foreign Ministry has given a big statement on Chabahar Port.
We are in talks with the American side
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a press conference on Friday, ‘On October 28, 2025, the US Treasury Department issued a letter giving guidance regarding the relaxation of conditional sanctions, which is valid till April 26, 2026. We are in talks with the American side to work on this arrangement.
It is noteworthy that Trump had said on January 12 that any country doing business with Iran would face 25 percent tariff ‘on any and all business done with America’. The report said that the US had certainly weakened India’s strategic move by re-imposing restrictions on the port from September 29, 2025.
This port is important for India
In fact, Chabahar Port is a question of India’s ‘lifeline’ to reach Central Asia, which has been prepared after a long time of hard work. This project not only provides trade benefits to India but also provides a solid means of balancing the influence of Pakistan and China in regional politics. India has built this port by spending about Rs 4,200 crore.
‘About 9,000 of our citizens are currently living in Iran’
On the situation in Iran, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, ‘About 9,000 of our citizens are currently living in Iran. Most of them are students… In view of the recent developments there, we have issued two or three advisories. In these advisories, we have advised our citizens in India not to travel to Iran at this time and we have advised Indian citizens living in Iran to leave the country by whatever means available. We are keeping a close eye on the situation there and as far as our citizens are concerned, we are committed to doing whatever is necessary for their well-being.
