Toll Plaza New Rules: There is a big news for the drivers traveling on Indian National Highways. The government has taken the final step towards making the toll collection process completely digital. Cash will not be accepted at any toll plaza across the country from April 1, 2026. Now passengers will have to pay only through FASTag or UPI.
What is the new rule?
According to the new rule, from April 1, 2026, the facility of cash payment will be completely stopped at all toll plazas across the country. Now only FASTag and UPI will be considered for entry at toll plaza. At present, many people stand in the cash lane despite having FASTag, which leads to long queues. These ‘cash lanes’ will be abolished from April 1.
With digital payment, vehicles will not have to stop at toll, which will not only save time but will also reduce the wastage of fuel due to frequent braking and starting of the vehicle. The government is soon going to implement Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system, where there will be no barriers and toll will be deducted automatically. This decision is the foundation of that future technology.
What is the situation at present?
For your information, let us tell you that under the rules applicable from November 15, 2025, if vehicles without FASTag pay through UPI, then they have to pay 1.25 times the toll. At the same time, double (2x) toll is being charged on cash payment. This option of giving double cash will also end from April 1, 2026.
What will change for the general public?
Those who do not have FASTag will have to get it installed before 1st April. It will be mandatory for those traveling on the highway to have UPI app (like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm) in their mobile so that payment can be made in emergency.
