A service used by 650,000 drivers has announced it will close it UK operations. Car-sharing company Zipcar has announced it will shut down its British arm following a consultation period that began late last year.
The closure will affect approximately 650,000 drivers nationwide. The US-owned firm informed British customers on December 1 that it intended to temporarily halt new bookings from the start of the year.
This prompted a formal consultation process with its UK-based employees, of which there were 71 at the end of 2024. In an email sent to customers on Friday, the company stated it "can now confirm that Zipcar will cease operating in the UK".

The message continued: "In accordance with clause 7.5 of the member terms, please take this as your written notice that we will formally close your account in 30 days' time. It's not possible to make any new bookings with Zipcar UK at this time, but your account will remain open until February 16."
Customers were informed they would receive a proportional refund for any unused portions of their current memberships or subscriptions, calculated from the beginning of 2026.
Zipcar confirmed this refund process would happen automatically without requiring any action from members. Company accounts revealed that the vehicle hire business saw its losses widen to £5.7 million in 2024 amid declining customer usage.
