The interim government of Bangladesh has approved an ordinance granting immunity from legal action to those involved in the violent protests of July 2024. Due to these protests, Sheikh Hasina’s government fell and an interim government was formed under the leadership of Yunus. Legal Affairs Minister Asif Nazrul said that the ‘July revolutionaries’ had put up political resistance for the formation of a democratic government, hence they have been given this exemption. Action will be taken against those who commit murder for personal gain.

The interim government of Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh has approved an ordinance to exempt people involved in violent protests from legal process in July 2024. It was through these protests that the government led by Sheikh Hasina was removed in Bangladesh on August 5, 2024 and after that an interim government led by Yunus was formed.

Asif Nazrul, the interim government’s minister in charge of legal affairs, said the July revolutionaries would not be prosecuted for their acts of political resistance. Taking this decision, the interim government has issued the July Mass Uprising Protection and Accountability Ordinance.

What did the minister in charge say?
The government had already announced this effect and had also given assurance to this effect to the people and youth involved in the July protests. Nazrul said that the revolutionaries had put up political resistance to remove the fascist government from the country and form a democratic government, hence they have been exempted from legal cases.

The minister in charge said, the cases registered by the police for the incidents that took place in July and early August will be withdrawn. Also, no new case will be registered. These revolutionaries will be called the warriors of July. Nazrul said, no person is above the law in the country. In July and August, any person who kills someone due to personal interest will be prosecuted as per the prescribed procedure of law.
