The Orlando Magic were locked in a tight battle with the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday — until Anthony Black lowered the boom with a powerful dunk over four defenders.
After Black’s jam broke a 107-107 tie, Orlando never trailed the rest of the way in their 118-111 victory. Paolo Banchero led the Magic with 26 points, but Black’s recent scoring bursts have helped transform the team’s previously inept offense into a respectable one.
Anthony Black improved his offense by heading to the hoop
It’s appropriate that Black’s big play Thursday would be a drive to the hoop, because it’s a big part of his offensive improvement this season. Black, who turns 22 on Jan. 20, is taking 4.4 attempts at the rim per game, up from 2.7 in 2024-25. Last year, he made 57.5 percent of those attempts, and this year it’s up to 67.8 percent.
He’s also turning those trips to the hoop into foul shots, getting 3.9 free throws per game and drawing 77 shooting fouls, after drawing 92 all of last season. He’s drawn 87 fouls overall while committing only 66.
Plus, he’s dunking a lot — 44 times in 41 games.
