New Delhi. The Seoul Central District Court of South Korea has sentenced former President Yoon Suk-yeol to five years in prison. Yole has been found guilty of several other charges, including obstruction of justice. This is the first decision to his short-term martial law declaration in December 2024.

The District Court ruled that Yoon had obstructed investigators trying to detain him in January last year, according to Yonhap News. Violated the rights of cabinet members who were not consulted on his martial law plan and drafted a revised martial law declaration after martial law was lifted. Former President Yoon Suk-yeol later destroyed it. He was also accused of ordering the deletion of records from secure military phones, although he was acquitted of some charges to press statements and the rights of two cabinet members. Judge Baek Dae-hyun said during the hearing, which was held in Yoon’s presence and broadcast live, that the former president showed no remorse. Special prosecutors had sought a ten-year sentence, citing the serious crime of privatization of state institutions to cover up and justify Yoon’s actions. The verdict is seen as setting the stage for a verdict in a separate trial next month, where prosecutors have accused Yoon of leading a rebellion during his brief martial law effort and are seeking the death penalty.
